Crafting with Wood Beads

Learn what kind of wood beads are best for your project....
Crafting with wooden beads can be fun, easy and cheap!

Wood beads are not the most glamorous objects. In fact, even among serious beading enthusiasts they rarely generate a lot of excitement. While they may not have the beauty of crystal beads, the wide range of uses of plastic beads or the slick appearance of metal or glass beads, they certainly have their uses, and I'm not just talking about as Buddhist or Catholic prayer beads.

Some wood beads have a long history and tradition. Many South Asian cultures have used fragrant sandalwood to make simple beads for prayer. The fresh, clean smell of the wood is said to aid in meditation. The smell and touch of the beads can keep you from becoming distracted by outside thoughts. Perhaps a string of sandalwood beads is the perfect gift for that friend of yours who is trying to concentrate on their studies or another important matter.

Wood beads come in many shapes and sizes. The appearance of the bead is determined by two main factors: the type of wood used and the area it was made in. For example, rosewood beads are often a little larger, and quite heavy for their size, due to the properties of the wood. Bamboo beads are often long and narrow, and very light, like the wood they're made from.

Areas like Eastern Europe or America produce beads that are simple and round or oval in shape. Other areas produce different traditional shapes and designs. Of course, there are some boutique bead designers that go out of their way to create intricate carvings and designs in the otherwise humble wooden bead. Check out your local bead shop to see what's available.

Wood beads are light and sturdy, and can be glued or strung onto a variety of wood crafts or other kinds of projects. They are also easy to customize. Next time you can't find the kind of bead you're looking for, buy some wooden beads and decorate them yourself. A simple stain or varnish will help bring out the natural grain of the wood. Alternately you can paint them, as they will easily absorb any color of paint. If you want a pattern, break out the mod podge and the tissue paper. By applying a layer of glue on the bead and then laying the patterned paper over it, you're getting a customized bead design.

Next time you're in the craft store, go ahead and give wood beads a try. With so many shapes, styles, sizes and colors of wood beads available, you're certain to find the perfect bead for your next project.
